The role is commonly referred to as pastor, shepherd or teacher. Ordained ministry often comes at the cost of emotional and physical turmoil in the life of a pastor. This project defines a non-active member as one who chooses not to participate in the worship or mission of the church, yet retains membership in the body. Through personal interviews with twenty non-active members, the author uncovered the variety of reasons for their non-active status. Contrasting their responses, the biblical and traditional theological standards of discipleship and meaningful membership were examined. Aggressively taking advantage of the privilege of being invited into people's homes and lives, the author explored Scripture, tradition, and church history to understand the importance of pastoral visitation. Questionnaires were sent to pastors and clerks of session on Long Island to understand their involvement in various areas of pastoral ministry. Nine months were spent in visitation with emphasis on twenty-five individuals or families. Some of these people were later interviewed to see if they valued the visits. Results indicated that clergy are missing something of immense importance if visitation is neglected."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31bd5819-b5a3-4928-96d5-b581f38b637b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720787056263168,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:11:31.318Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:50:40Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:08:44Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"30f118a2-4e93-4ee1-b95e-28824689d22a","accessControl_ssim":["503e9b4f-428e-4306-a2d6-de725168f2cc"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Celebrating our common humanity: forging links between the church and persons with disabilities"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:50:39Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:33:23Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["05f81e71-5005-4f03-a68b-17b7312a2a72"],"hasLease_ssim":["c29cb4a1-525b-4356-a13a-7055865dae6c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Andrew Purves"],"year_tesim":["1988"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert A Miller"],"publisher_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Image of God","Church work with people with disabilities"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The assumptions of institutions and human services regarding the humanity of the disabled are distorted and dehumanizing.
