Ministry that affirms racial identity, self-concept and community empowerment can bring about the transformation of African-American United Methodist churches.  The project outlined was a study of some of the themes of Afrocentric spirituality and implementation of those themes in programs of ministry. Two projects, a rite of passage program for boys and a convocation-type event, were developed and evaluated. Black males are fraught with negative societal perceptions in Alexandria and need support in positive self-esteem, moral, and spiritual persuasion.  They are victimized by poor education, poor economics, and a shrinking labor market.  Many young Black males are involved in a life of crime as the result of hopelessness. Pre- and post-intervention interviews were conducted.  A literature review relates to academic failure of African-American students. It is exacerbated today because of an unbalanced reliance on the historical-critical method and on a unhealthy trend toward the privatization of faith.  We can recover the story of our lives, the biblical narrative that is identity-shaping.  To do so entails the use of an inclusive hermeneutic, one which draws us into an intentional dialogue with the text and with one another.
