The shock program features a substance abuse program based on the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and uses a five-step decision-making process in teaching life skills.  The project addresses these dynamics in relationship to biblical application.  The purpose was to present inmates with an alternate program based on Christian principles. Cecile Currier in her book Learning to Step Together (1982) reports that there are 1300 new stepfamilies forming every day in America.  The question is, What is the church doing to help stepfamilies? Stepfamily adults gathered to form a support group dealing with loyalty conflicts, ex-spousal issues, discipline, strengthening the marriage relationship and others. Important to the course is the Bible study material relating to the subject matter being discussed. A program of four gatherings with the leadership in nine local churches was pursued during fall 1992.  Seven of the churches were younger than ten years.  Two were older churches.  The author used three different surveys among the leaders and members.  Any increase in cooperation in terms of objective growth was not possible to measure. However, the author found new insights regarding existing weaknesses in the fellowship.
