The ministerial relationship is identified as the locus of these difficulties and as the essential tool of the trade in ministry. Relational patterns in the interactions of misconducting predecessors are shown to generate a process by which the integrity of ministerial relationships deteriorates rendering subsequent ministries predictably difficult. Drawing on relational theory and studies of effective ministers, a model of relational competence is constructed and an ethical standard articulated.
