The thesis is that pastors are best prepared to intervene in abusive marriages when they have: 1) become knowledgeable about the nature and dynamics of the abusive marriage; 2) addressed their own fears and biases about violence in the home; 3) understood that theologically, violence and abuse are outside the scope of normative Christian marriage; and 4) are prepared to intervene in such a way that both partners are helped to recognize and receive help, and will support, if necessary, separation and divorce as viable solutions to the problem.
