The issue of spousal abuse has combined with theological, biblical and socio-cultural misunderstandings. Misquoted Bible verses, exaggerated theological doctrines, and teachings in the church have added more guilt and self-denouncement to the suffering for victims of spousal abuse. This, in turn, provided the abusers with an excuse, a rationalization, and a justification for the abuse. It is time to clarify the wrongful misunderstandings and prejudices in the new millennium. We should open a new era of the church in Christ, as a model for God's reign, void of discrimination among Jews, Greeks, women, men, both slaves and free. At the same time, in Korean culture and surroundings, unless we change the dominant subordinating social structure that is patriarchal and gender exclusive, and shatter the systematic cultural structure, it is impossible to get rid of the roots of abuse which are deeply embedded in the cultures and lives of Koreans.
