Using analogies drawn from the Genesis narrative about Jacob's life, the theoretical approach for this study evolved from cultural anthropology, filtered through family systems and object-relations principles. The purpose is to reveal underlying structural changes that are fueling the UM debate. The scope is confined to interview material gathered from six United Methodist clergypersons.
