Modern rabbis accept those changes, and attempt to use these new roles to establish their authority in the synagogue and community. Based on extensive interviews with Jewish Theological Seminary-trained congregational rabbis in northern California, the nature of that authority is studied.  The project concludes that rabbis utilize an 'authority of process.'
