The problem is outlined from a sociological, theological and local parish perspective.  Self-denial ethics and ethics based on expressive individualism are examined sociologically.  Karl Barth's doctrine of justification is compared with Philip Brickman's definition of commitment. Christian freedom is discussed as the necessary ingredient for lifelong commitments.
