The author integrates both a cognitive and a subjective style of writing, using theoretical materials, personal illustrations and examples from his psychotherapy and pastoral counseling caseload.  The author states that both subjective (affective) and objective (cognitive) empathy are essential kinds of empathy in the development of mature empathy.
