A herald is one commissioned and sent by another to speak his message in his behalf to a recipient. A divine herald is one commissioned and sent by a deity to speak a divine message to the people of the deity's choosing. Thus, a preacher is one who comes to understand the text of Scripture, and therefore grasps the message of God, and is then commissioned and sent to speak his message to God's people. His competence and success is dependent on his faithfulness to accomplish this duty. Postmodernism may be a new culture, but the nature of preaching has not changed.
