What is essentially lacking is an appreciation for encountering God in religious experience.  This project examines the importance of primary knowledge of God through mystical religious experience.  Chapter 1 addresses the theological basis for encountering God within the context of Jungian psychology, William James and the Western Christian tradition.  Ultimately a theology of the Christian mystical experience of union with God is framed within the Reformed positions of John Calvin and Karl Barth.  The minister's role as a spiritual director is examined in chapter 2. Group experiences are suggested as an alternative or prelude to the one-on-one relationship.  Selection of a curriculum and lesson plans for a spiritual encounter group are submitted in chapter 3. The story of the formation of a spiritual encounter group is told in chapter 4.
