This study reviews the thought of major thinkers from the fields of philosophy, theology, and architecture regarding the affective nature of such places.  An experimental planning workshop invites a religious congregation's members to identify symbolic expression desired in a sacred space. The project tests the usefulness of architect Chris Alexander's pattern language theory as the basis of a methodology for this purpose.
