It is the first stage of the psychotherapeutic process, and can help to locate the specific nature of a person's guilt, remorse, depression, and sadness. Confession, along with a call upon some power greater than one's self, plays a vital part in the recovery process of the alcoholic.  It is a central thrust of the program of Alcoholics Anonymous.  The pastoral counselor is a therapist but also a pastor, a representative of God. The element of confession becomes sharper in pastoral counseling because of the pastor's dual role.
