The theoretical foundation for the study is in adult education and examines concepts of experiential and transformative learning, processes of meaning-making and the social construction of the self, as well as the centrality of narrative and autobiography in personal learning. Theological reflections focus on the social and historical conditions of learning in the Christian community, the narrative structure of faith, and the contributions of both narrative and biographical theology to an understanding of Christian identity and change. The research methodology used is qualitative case study guided by Mishler's narrative approach to research interviewing. Five participants were interviewed with an attempt at gender equity and variety in denominational attachment. Results reveal the intense relationship between personal change, vocational identity and ministerial practice. The study demonstrates the extent to which lifelong themes were translated into ministerial practice, how trauma impacted the learning process, and the contribution of faith to learning. In group spiritual direction a group leader enables participants to provide spiritual guidance and care for one another. The project coaches group members in using cognitive therapy--a preferred treatment for depressed persons in which change is accomplished through adult learning--to address spiritual needs of the member whose difficulties are the focus of any given session. The project facilitates a model of adult learning, known as Transformative Learning, through practice of reflection. After considering biblical teaching on human sexuality, marriage, and family from an evangelical perspective, the project studies the morality of spiritual leaders in ancient Israel and the apostolic church. In order to understand why contemporary spiritual leaders succumb to sexual temptation, the project investigates the character of contemporary society, the contributions of contemporary psychology, and the marriages of these leaders, drawing on surveys of contemporary marriage and family life conducted by Christianity Today Institute (1992), Evangelical Fellowship of Canada (1994), and the project survey of pastors in the United Baptist Convention of the Atlantic Provinces (1995). Psychological insights also inform an effort to determine why some women become victims of sexual misbehavior by spiritual leaders. Employing a literature review, archival research, oral histories, and a survey questionnaire, the project uncovered a history punctuated with tensions. United Baptist patients expect evangelical pastoral support; they are satisfied with their experience of HBHC. Neither individuals nor congregations will accept a fully ecumenical chaplaincy. The project recommends that HBHC be incorporated under a board that can secure funding under its own foundation.
