In response to these findings and questions, a standard of care and the norms that ground it within the sacred foundation of ministry was developed. The results of the study suggest that chaplains may have a role in helping patients address their unresolved forgiveness issues and lowered motivation by helping the patients work through a forgiveness process.  For patients with conditions caused at least in part by their own behavior, or even by someone else, offers case studies of pastoral care provided in light of unresolved forgiveness issues and a working through of a forgiveness process. None is more essential than shame.  Survivors need help in moving out from trauma and humiliation to celebrate goodness and right to joy. After presenting some psychological and theological foundations of shame, this project explores various treatment modalities and presents combined treatment (individual and group therapy with the same therapist) as a powerful tool to identify and treat shame. Clinical data prove the effectiveness of this modality. The paper also offers specific practical suggestions for working with victims and survivors. The author has used her own experience of victimization and the experiences of adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse as a way of presenting the issues involved.  The biblical record is explored, looking first at the roots of violence evident in Scripture and, also, the seeds of hope contained therein. The paper includes a report and analysis of a workshop organized and led by the author and Gretchen Helm, EdD.  The workshop provides insights taken from an experience of reactions to the issues raised by the sexual abuse of female children.  Because the paper deals exclusively with counseling female survivors the biblical and theological perspectives are weighted toward the feminist perspective. A ritual of union and homosexual case study reveal the psychological basis is the family of origin, generational patterning, and systems approach.
