Should psychotherapy be conducted with parishioners?  Can psychotherapy be effective?  This project examines these issues using investigative research and systematic analysis. Psychotherapeutic principles criticize methods that compromise boundaries.  In the parochial setting dual role relationships and symbiotic drives compromise the therapist's anonymity and neutrality. The project argues that these dynamics become opportunities for interpretation and analysis.  The project proposes strategies and parameters to aid the psychotherapeutic process. The paper found that an aspect of the counselor's identity which is not well developed has an adverse influence on the counseling relationship.  An aspect of the counselor's identity which is mature has a positive influence on the relationship.
