Exploring play's potential, this study asks: can play effect one's ability to car for others and oneself by stimulating new perceptions and capacities that foster individual and communal wholeness? Five capacities of play, befriending one's body, engaging the inner child, expressing feeling, developing spontaneity, and opening perceptive innocence, are investigated. Using Relational Cultural Theory and Behavioral Medicine a qualitative case study explores play as care, adapting transitional space into 'formative space of play' utilizing InterPlay. The result is a Ministry of Presence enriched by mindfulness, acceptance, and lovingkindness among other Buddhist principles. Pastoral care, 'the cure of souls' (often in a one-to-one relationship between pastor and people), takes on a corporate, comprehensive dimension when it enables and equips laity for ministry. Pastoral care, the church and the world are all enhanced when the ultimate goal is not solely the care or cure of souls, but ministry itself.  Premises regarding each aspect of lay ministry are challenged by the results of a survey of fifty people involved in ministry, and follow-up interviews with fifteen.  Results suggest methods of enabling lay ministry that are supportive within a local church. There are about 9 million Mexican-Americans and 2 million Puerto Ricans in the US. Both Hispanic groups are at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder, and face discrimination, unemployment, poor housing and low educational achievement. Puerto Ricans on the mainland appear to have a higher incidence of mental illness than Mexican-Americans. Mexican-Americans tend to be more acculturated and live in less stressful conditions than Puerto Ricans.  There is a high rate of underutilization of mental health services by Hispanics.  The shortage of Hispanic-American priests is an obstacle to strong Hispanic leadership in the Roman Catholic Church. Protestant Hispanics are mostly evangelical in theology and conservative in life-style with little involvement in socio-political action.  There are almost no pastoral psychology programs to train Hispanic leaders in pastoral counseling and chaplaincy.
