An integral part of this effort was a discussion of the development of the theology behind this response and the evolution of modern theology in response to the social and political situation in Guatemala.  The author contends that the Catholic Church underwent a substantive change in the last forty years in how it responded in Guatemala. There are about 9 million Mexican-Americans and 2 million Puerto Ricans in the US. Both Hispanic groups are at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder, and face discrimination, unemployment, poor housing and low educational achievement. Puerto Ricans on the mainland appear to have a higher incidence of mental illness than Mexican-Americans. Mexican-Americans tend to be more acculturated and live in less stressful conditions than Puerto Ricans.  There is a high rate of underutilization of mental health services by Hispanics.  The shortage of Hispanic-American priests is an obstacle to strong Hispanic leadership in the Roman Catholic Church. Protestant Hispanics are mostly evangelical in theology and conservative in life-style with little involvement in socio-political action.  There are almost no pastoral psychology programs to train Hispanic leaders in pastoral counseling and chaplaincy.
