The metaphor of Christian pilgrimage as a biblical and historical model complements this ascetic spirituality. This study provides theories of interpretation and knowing for spiritual directors.  The unconscious is variously understood to impede knowledge, to provide the building blocks for all knowledge and to constitute the essential prerequisites for religious knowledge and experience.  Models are used to organize diverse theories. Catholic theological structure, defined by the magesterium, is used because of theological conviction and the opinion that religious knowledge requires interface between personal structures with superordinate structures. Using the concept of 'levels of truth' from Anne Wilson Schaef's book, Women's Reality, as the organizational backbone, three levels of relationships are addressed.  Level one outlines the congruent interface between psychotherapy and spiritual direction where emotional needs and the spiritual search are one in the same.  Level two outlines the incongruent areas where both disciplines stand in a relationship of tension.  Four areas are explored: awakened consciousness, ego-negation, self-knowledge, and discernment.  The bridge building chapter integrates the theory of Winnicott, Rizzuto, and Meissner with the thinking of Needleman, Edwards and Jones.  Level three is a synthesis of both disciplines.  The common meeting ground is in Winnicott's 'potential space'."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133371019034625,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:18:13.199Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":4,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Laurel Artress Ulrich","hits":1,"label":"Laurel Artress Ulrich"},{"value":"Phil Marshall Negley","hits":1,"label":"Phil Marshall Negley"},{"value":"Richard J Dickey","hits":1,"label":"Richard J Dickey"},{"value":"William J Forker","hits":1,"label":"William J Forker"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Theology, Catholic","hits":1,"label":"Theology, Catholic"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Spiritual direction","hits":4,"label":"Spiritual direction"},{"value":"Church group work","hits":1,"label":"Church group work"},{"value":"Class meetings, Methodist","hits":1,"label":"Class meetings, Methodist"},{"value":"Consciousness","hits":1,"label":"Consciousness"},{"value":"Ego (Psychology)","hits":1,"label":"Ego (Psychology)"},{"value":"Pilgrims and pilgrimages","hits":1,"label":"Pilgrims and pilgrimages"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":4,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Andover Newton Theological School","hits":4,"label":"Andover Newton Theological School"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":4,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"1986","hits":1,"label":"1986"},{"value":"1992","hits":1,"label":"1992"},{"value":"1994","hits":1,"label":"1994"},{"value":"1996","hits":1,"label":"1996"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Andover Newton Theological School","hits":4,"label":"Andover Newton Theological School"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":4,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Andover Newton Theological School","hits":4,"label":"Andover Newton Theological School"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":4,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":4,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
