There is much voluntary outpouring of remorse, guilt and shame in the confession of sin. In the light of self-psychology and object relation theory, this study indicates how narcissistic wounds are often at the heart of confessions, and how the priest hearing confession can more effectively address the healing of these wounds. Methodology includes: (1) Attending to woman's experience affecting her sense of self; (2) Deconstructing patriarchal dominance and violence impacting woman's sense of self (gender wounds); (3) Reconstructing a feminist interdisciplinary conversation between relational psychology (Jean Baker Miller, relational cultural theory), and relational theology (Rosemary Ruether, Carter Heyward). Nevertheless, members of churches in this setting do respond to invitations to reflect theologically and to talk about their faith.  The author facilitated theological reflection by lay people in three different churches.  Church life and committee work provided material for consideration.  Participants readily accepted the invitation, quickly developing facility with responding to questions posed by the author, and making connections with biblical material. This study provides theories of interpretation and knowing for spiritual directors.  The unconscious is variously understood to impede knowledge, to provide the building blocks for all knowledge and to constitute the essential prerequisites for religious knowledge and experience.  Models are used to organize diverse theories. Catholic theological structure, defined by the magesterium, is used because of theological conviction and the opinion that religious knowledge requires interface between personal structures with superordinate structures.
