It ascertains general trends and attitudes, examines the central biblical, theological and psychological issues and assesses the unique factors of clergy divorce, e.g., what it is like to have marital difficulties which are adversely affecting not only family well-being and happiness but also one's ability to minister and perform pastoral care? of tremendous concern is how the people of the church react when their pastor announces the fact of the separation and/or divorce. Will judgment override all caring and support? who will respond and how? what about his/her ministerial image? the writer was amazed to learn that even though a judgmental attitude toward divorce still harbors within the Christian community, there is a growing tolerance and acceptance of it within the more liberal, mainline parishes. The final chapter offers suggestions to the local church and to church officials as to ways of helping stem the increasing tide of clergy divorce. Clergy are often the last to seek counseling and are subject to the pressures of unreal expectations which are often mutually accepted by pastors and parishioners and others with whom they relate."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133321706602496,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:17:26.171Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:32:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:29:39Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d7951b1a-2074-419b-bd4b-19a081050427","accessControl_ssim":["16e0542d-09c2-4c07-81ad-875ffe678d1f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The role of language as both a psychological and a theological phenomenon"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:32:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:17:53Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["19f2e6dd-a1c9-40ff-8c8f-a2081eeeef0e"],"hasLease_ssim":["b60e9d7c-49b8-4737-b7b5-b7b01d692d88"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Paul Huss"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Curtis Wilfred Penney"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Reconciliation","Language and languages--Religious aspects","Pastoral counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The role of language as both a psychological and a theological phenomenon: from the perspective of the pastoral counselor as both psychologist and theologian. This study explores the understanding of humanity as a linguistic being. The role of language is explored on the biological, psychological and theological levels. Through this exploration, humanity is understood to be a linguistic being biologically who relates to others, self and God through the use of language and linguistic form. The psyche is composed of two fundamental states: conscious and unconscious. Integration of these states occurs and exists through language or, more precisely, through the dynamic tension between symbol and linguistic form in which the linguistic form brings the linked material into consciousness. In using creation myths of the Old Testament as metaphor, the role of language as a theological phenomenon is explored. Language is fundamental in creation and in one's relaitonship to and with God. The pastoral counselor, in a unique situation as both psychologist and theologian, is able to bring the individual into reconciliation with self, others and God through the use and the power of the Word."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134093917814784,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:29:42.609Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:32:58Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:20:50Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5e536061-47d6-4fa9-a7cf-dbea1753dda1","accessControl_ssim":["f9442c90-45df-4083-a930-9f683cbeaa93"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Symptomatology and management of acute grief as experienced by death and dying"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:32:57Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:54:21Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ede73d2b-8d61-43db-ae7a-d2bfc09b5306"],"hasLease_ssim":["fa2163ed-1ac3-4132-bd8f-6c7e56bebe35"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Henry C Brooks"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robin George Ellis Murray"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Grief","Death","Crisis"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Throughout the centuries the Christian pastor has been involved with parishioners in times of crisis and distress. Crisis management/intervention is not counseling; its goal is the resolution of the crisis and a return to normalcy. The appendices are: 1) two verbatims dealing with a dying patient and a grief sufferer; 2) four surveys; 3) a detailed instruction format for persons who are called upon to manage/intervene in crisis situations; 4) practical aspects of crisis intervention/management; and 5) general considerations on death and dying. In this sense, suicide is a fundamental option of the will, a truly human action. This paper reviews suicide as a phenomenon of behavior. Special attention is paid to the problems of definition and causation. At present the disciplines of psychology and sociology have suggested the major theoretical constructs that might explain suicide. Explanations draw heavily from both disciplines. Chapters on hunger striking and the loss of hope are included. It is now clear that hunger striking is an ancient practice, common to all ages, societies and races. Its effectiveness varies greatly according to circumstance. Alienation is seen primarily as a loss of hope. Here hope is treated as a virtue. Its violations are despair and presumption. There is a difference between the legal and moral evaluation of suicide. Each pastoral counselor responds from a personal value system. The problem of guilt is particularly acute when associated with suicide. Whatever the civil right involved, guilt is not so easily dismissed."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133350324338688,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:17:53.463Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:32:29Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:15:09Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2612ebf0-6bcd-4693-aeeb-98477be4ef56","accessControl_ssim":["c85dd02a-2a85-4d91-bac0-4cd9e4759c83"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The presentor model: experimental component of the field education program for raising and discussing pastoral issues using guest presentors"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:32:28Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:15:11Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ea6c7cae-af3d-493a-85da-fc1816f0813e"],"hasLease_ssim":["f8af9e1b-14c4-47a8-a375-2800a14f3dce"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["George H Sinclair"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Gerasimos Murphy"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy","Theology, Practical","Orthodox Eastern Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The Presentor Model: an experimental component of the field education program at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Theological School for raising and discussing selected pastoral issues and topics using guest presentors. Most newly ordained Orthodox clergy are assigned to parishes as sole pastor immediately upon ordination. The project addresses this fact by suggesting that parish ministry is enhanced by the collaboration of pastors with other professionals. Angry, aggressive feelings and their results have usually been the symptom, overt or covert, presented to the therapist. Medicine shows that aggression and anger are necessary for the cure of illness. When a patient loses his ability to fight, he has lost his ability to cure himself or be healed. Inability to constructively use anger results in anxiety, fear, depression and guilt. A review of the literature, starting with Freud, shows researchers using the expression of anger in therapy as early as the post-WW1 era. Psychiatrists began with aggressive behavior, drugs, hypnosis, and have moved into implosion theory, desensitization, primal scream, and silent abregation. Social learning theories have added the possibility of unlearning negative behavior. After therapists are comfortable with expressions of negative emotions of anger, they can set limits for self and client to keep feelings from intermingling. Then they will be using anger to control the client's behavior while provoking expression of hidden feelings."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133135663005696,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:14:28.745Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:31:58Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:29:46Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"dac88662-d925-4c82-81e7-84865c5266fe","accessControl_ssim":["6010e56f-05b1-4a57-a66d-8f979ab3efeb"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Pastoral psychotherapy and adolescence"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:31:57Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:23:20Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9133cd51-88f0-4e0f-b990-da35f529f951"],"hasLease_ssim":["d856d750-468e-4209-9990-64c4b9c1871e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Henry C Brooks"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["William Robert Lutz"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Pastoral psychology","Psychotherapy","Adolescence"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["From working with youth groups, then being a parish minister to adolescents, and finally in specializing in pastoral psychotherapy, the author has realized there is a need for a deeper understanding of the adolescent experience. The paper shows that the faith of the counselee can bring forgotten material to awareness and to resolution when prayer is used in the process of active imagination. The notion of active imagination is found in the works of C G Jung. Qualities of active imagination in some of the commentaries on Jung are listed. After examining the effects of original sin, the author examines the process of redemption that seeks to heal these wounds of human nature. He then takes an in-depth look at grace and faith in this process of healing and examines the understanding of prayer as an instrument of this entire process. Christ-centered prayer has a special power. Actual cases of counseling, prayer and active imagination help to understand the results of such a procedure to the counselee. The minister is truly counselor and pastor as the Holy Spirit brings light and healing."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134165871099904,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:30:51.229Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:31:57Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:31:32Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f18421f6-8a5e-4737-af61-bef54cdd5de1","accessControl_ssim":["972b0d67-0346-4354-8af1-4fd36e2300d9"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Therapeutic issues in premarital counseling"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:31:56Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:01:38Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["6be59e6e-b553-4381-b6da-2a4eef38601d"],"hasLease_ssim":["0c31e745-ed85-4c9b-915f-8494eacaf987"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Paul Huss"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Dennis Edward Leblanc"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Remarriage","Pastoral counseling","Marriage counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This paper shares the minister/counselor's experience in work with couples preparing for marriage. The author indicates important issues in premarital counseling. Experience with divorced persons who choose to remarry aids him in understanding the signposts and cautions, the strengths and limitations of a marriage relationship. Insight into the struggles and pains of first marriages, and willingness to share how that experience informs their second marriage is an important resource for identifying key issues in the development of healthy or unhealthy relationships. Significant personal and interpersonal issues in growing with another person in a marriage relationship are dependence, independence and interdependence.
