Early concepts of trust versus mistrust are connected to the infant's needs being met regularly, lovingly, and satisfactorily by the primary person in the infant's life.  Belief systems are healthy or unhealthy in proportion to the repetitive healthy or unhealthy situations that are encountered during one's development. Belief systems are not synonymous with ego development, but the two occur simultaneously.  Understanding the concept of belief systems enabled the author to understand the clients who entered therapy with him.  This understanding affects the way he listens, perceives and filters information, and conducts himself in therapy sessions. The term 'healing relationship' refers to the one-on-one relationship between therapist and client.  His personal reflection on the healing community reviews the journey from ordination to psychotherapy, and describes the integration of two vocations into one--pastoral psychotherapist."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134068734164992,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:29:18.592Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:30:03Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:15:24Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"278ec39f-cbbe-4504-a1b8-f0fd964036af","accessControl_ssim":["41af017b-256e-4ed0-8023-13e5107b87ab"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The impact of failure in the symbiotic and separation-individuation phases of human development on marital interaction"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:30:02Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:17:27Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["900b9f91-70cd-422b-8b74-2bf73d2ffab9"],"hasLease_ssim":["e794bbc7-c5c3-41ae-8f34-adf93308d827"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Henry C Brooks"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Howard M Beardslee"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Interpersonal relations","Child development","Autonomy","Marriage counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This paper discusses growth and development physically and psychically from birth to death.  The primary focus is on symbiosis and separation-individuation. It is seen that successful attainment of a symbiotic relationship between mother and infant is essential if the next phase, separation-individuation is to take place in the infant's normal movement to autonomy.  In working with two people, a man and woman, who have opted for a heterosexual relationship with each other, a principal area of conflict is in their inability to function autonomously. The developmental phases known as symbiosis and separation-individuation not having been satisfactorily achieved for either, the relationship has been an unsuccessful attempt to redress, or correct what went askew in the nursery. The author shows the therapeutic techniques employed to begin the reeducative process so that both may eventually be capable of making autonomous choices relatively free from the conflicts that now make such choices impossible.  Consideration is given to the possibility of applying the psychotherapeutic approach to the church and the religious community."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133197288865792,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:15:27.516Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:30:02Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:18:51Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"46a62f9b-951c-43da-96e9-4e6e08a505e1","accessControl_ssim":["62ccf2f1-d65e-4d57-bde5-7a9a5985c596"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Toward healing and wholeness: woman in pastoral counseling"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:30:01Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:11:38Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b19fee7a-c612-41f4-95c6-26f1a55a6e8f"],"hasLease_ssim":["d887ce01-60f0-4a96-90c1-6fd8c2421b1f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Paul Huss"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Vera Arndt Bush"],"keyword_tesim":["Pastoral counselors"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Sex role","Women clergy"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["For the woman in pastoral counseling the challenging process of becoming more fully human as was Jesus is the foundation of her ministry to and with others.  Scenes from a woman's case present conflicts in cultural roles.  The paper explores myths and roles regarding woman in the ancient past and God's promise for humankind in the Old and New Testaments and in the historical church.  It looks at male and female role models in the predominantly male profession of ministry.  In Jesus woman finds the fully human being in God's image.  He is the individuated, integrated being who is the role model for woman as well as man.  Two case studies furnish examples of woman as pastoral counselor.  She becomes prophet as well as servant, enabler and nurturer, the wounded healer for, and with, others.  In reconciliation woman contributes toward healing and wholeness of all humanity in responsible partnership with man. Robert's defenses are obsessive compulsive neurosis, while Mary's are hysterical.  Their marriage began more tentatively than most, with Mary continuing to rent a separate apartment and continuing an affair, thus preserving the boundaries that were not available in the incestuous family of her origins.  Robert's boundaries were too rigid, and his sexuality highly repressed.  In the course of the therapy the marriage is strengthened; the apartment is given up and the affair ended.  The author considers major theoretical contributions to the practice of therapy including Margaret Mahler's studies of the first three years of life as early sources of intrapsychic and interpersonal conflict.  Object relations theory is explored. Family systems theory focuses on the dynamic interaction within a whole, complementing object relations theory. Using feminist hermeneutics, the author explores these issues through a critique of theological and visual art resources, and offers an alternative ecclesiology which fosters greater hospitality and inclusion."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134097632919552,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:29:46.152Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:28:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:29:12Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d3438a91-2b20-42df-91f0-b0594f62225c","accessControl_ssim":["0c4c7474-b738-4c96-a24a-979b3691c6eb"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Hidden meanings in negro spirituals from slave times: exploring the overlap of education, worship, and entertainment in the transmission of cultural heritage"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:28:37Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:10:14Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["49ba716f-3420-48c5-b55a-48b77382991d"],"hasLease_ssim":["21459661-923b-4cb4-b78c-1932e41210f6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Kirk Byron Jones"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Celestine T Reid"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["African Americans","Slavery","History","Spirituals (Songs)","Folk music","Folk songs"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project presents a model which can be used as an educational tool for presenting and preserving awareness of the African and African-American slaves' experience. Why?  In this project, particular attention is paid to the manner in which post-Enlightenment modernity has undercut the vitality of the mainline church especially with reference to the authority of scripture.  Modernity, with its emphasis on the rational, has forced scripture to be read through a naturalistic framework depriving the story of any supernatural elements.  While postmodernism's challenge to absolute rationality offers the possibility of many ways or modes of knowing, such a challenge creates greater space for the possibility of revelation through the reading of the scriptural story."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133815839653888,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:25:17.413Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":302,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"Dissertation","hits":1,"label":"Dissertation"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Conrad S Pecevich","hits":2,"label":"Conrad S Pecevich"},{"value":"A Rand Peabody","hits":1,"label":"A Rand Peabody"},{"value":"Abel Vilcapoma","hits":1,"label":"Abel Vilcapoma"},{"value":"Adele Smith-Penniman","hits":1,"label":"Adele Smith-Penniman"},{"value":"Alan C Macy","hits":1,"label":"Alan C Macy"},{"value":"Alan W Grant","hits":1,"label":"Alan W Grant"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Pastoral counselors and clients","hits":4,"label":"Pastoral counselors and clients"},{"value":"Congregations--Internal conflict","hits":2,"label":"Congregations--Internal conflict"},{"value":"Family systems theory","hits":2,"label":"Family systems theory"},{"value":"Pastoral counselors","hits":2,"label":"Pastoral counselors"},{"value":"Psyche","hits":2,"label":"Psyche"},{"value":"Relation (Theology)","hits":2,"label":"Relation (Theology)"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Psychology","hits":30,"label":"Psychology"},{"value":"Pastoral counseling","hits":28,"label":"Pastoral counseling"},{"value":"Psychotherapy","hits":21,"label":"Psychotherapy"},{"value":"Church work","hits":18,"label":"Church work"},{"value":"Clergy","hits":16,"label":"Clergy"},{"value":"Pastoral psychology","hits":14,"label":"Pastoral psychology"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[{"value":"United States","hits":5,"label":"United States"},{"value":"Japan","hits":2,"label":"Japan"},{"value":"Ghana--Accra","hits":1,"label":"Ghana--Accra"},{"value":"Guatemala","hits":1,"label":"Guatemala"},{"value":"India","hits":1,"label":"India"},{"value":"Kenya","hits":1,"label":"Kenya"}],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":303,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Andover Newton Theological School","hits":303,"label":"Andover Newton Theological School"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":303,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"1982","hits":27,"label":"1982"},{"value":"1992","hits":22,"label":"1992"},{"value":"1986","hits":21,"label":"1986"},{"value":"1987","hits":21,"label":"1987"},{"value":"1988","hits":20,"label":"1988"},{"value":"1996","hits":19,"label":"1996"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Andover Newton Theological School","hits":303,"label":"Andover Newton Theological School"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":303,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Andover Newton Theological School","hits":303,"label":"Andover Newton Theological School"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":303,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":29,"next_page":30,"prev_page":28,"total_pages":31,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":280,"total_count":303,"first_page?":false,"last_page?":false}}}
