Research from several United States Catholic dioceses has shown that parishioners desire to hear engaging homilies when they go to Mass. This author holds that reading a short story a week inspires preachers to adopt short-story traits for their preaching, like unity, brevity, and open-endedness, all of which captivate listeners. This project’s intervention involved qualitative research with five preachers from the Dominican Province of St. Martin de Porres in the southern United States. These preachers were asked to read short stories for twenty-six weeks and to allow their preaching to be evaluated approximately once a month for six months to see if their homilies would become more captivating. In this blind study, the preachers were not cued on what to look for in short stories, and the evaluators were not informed that the preachers were reading short stories. The goal was to see if reading short stories alone was enough to make homilies more captivating. The results from the twenty-six-week intervention showed no clear evidence that reading short stories helped preachers preach captivating homilies, except maybe in the case of one preacher who was already preaching narratively before the intervention began. What is clear from the intervention, however, is that narrative preaching is exceptionally good at captivating people. Further testing is warranted, with such corrections as taking a longer time frame to measure the effects of reading short stories and as preachers being informed about the nature of the intervention and the genre of short stories. The benefit of preaching captivating homilies is that people are more likely to receive the preached message, retain it, and put it into practice."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130105581404160,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:26:19.035Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:35:09Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:26:40Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"778e5f36-5b1a-4953-81ab-1ff42b0190e7","accessControl_ssim":["0f6fbf52-a76e-4422-96c5-88fcf2783550"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching Missionary Discipleship: A Homiletic Response to Declining Participation at Risen Christ Catholic Parish in Denver and the Catholic Church of the United States of America"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:35:08Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:38:38Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["6c00777f-234b-45cc-b7a5-2370fdb2aa8d"],"hasLease_ssim":["8ba8a93e-3f51-4a19-bb65-15cfdaec9dd3"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Preaching"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Gregory Heille OP D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2022"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. It considers the impact it has had on the Catholic Church in the United States as a whole as well as some specific generations.Chapter 4 offers an in-depth explanation of the acronym “BREATHE” and how each characteristic of that acronym should inform our preaching. It also loosely corresponds each letter to the seven different stages of growth toward missionary discipleship.Chapter 5 and its subsequent appendices provide the statistical data of one Catholic parish where the acronym was implemented in a five-week preaching exercise to reach the most Catholics possible in that one setting. It then considers the response and how that aligns with the statistical data found in chapter three.Chapter 6 offers conclusions to the thesis overall and a recommendation of how to move forward while acknowledging the limitations of this one exercise and the importance of an overall plan to form and send the average parishioner into the world to bring more souls to Christ."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130131105841152,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:26:43.377Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:32:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:23:46Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"148152d2-7d74-4bf9-94c7-a91b2ec40fde","accessControl_ssim":["f9a62a89-e6b3-4574-9030-058fecb1b903"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching Christ From Vietnamese Proverbs And Folk Poetry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:31:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:43:42Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["66cc761e-e2eb-490d-be35-cd6182f42c93"],"hasLease_ssim":["2d7e53ad-6a46-49d7-bf5e-3649c0f61cce"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Homiletics"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Hy K. Young people in the world and in the Church are full of potential, and it is incumbent upon preachers to harness that potential through their preaching. Unfortunately, many adolescents find contemporary sermons laborious and irrelevant. Young people are in a constant state of flux due to the physiological, neurological, psychological, and spiritual changes taking place in adolescence. Those in the thick of this period of tumultuous development desire, and deserve, to be heard by their parents, their teachers, and especially their priests or ministers—and to receive engaging, pertinent homilies. This thesis aims to equip preachers with five principles of preaching for adolescents: Authenticity, Directness, Engagement, Relevance, and Relationality. These principles are based on the current scientific research of adolescent brain development, psychosocial theories, and spiritual development as well as the responses of actual adolescents who participated in eight Adolescent Focus Group Interviews concerning their real-life experiences of preaching. To test the effectiveness of these five principles of preaching, four priests engaged in a process of self-reflection and homily evaluation. They responded to a self-inventory on their understanding of preaching for adolescents, and they also preached homilies which were evaluated by adolescents. In addition to the self-inventories and homily evaluations, the priests attended three workshops on those five principles of preaching for adolescents. The results of the priests’ self-inventories and the adolescent homily evaluations demonstrated that the adolescent evaluators responded positively to the priests’ implementation of Authenticity, Directness, Engagement, Relevance, and Relationality. These results suggest that the five principles of preaching for adolescents are effective means of improving preaching for young people in the Church today by addressing their developmental needs."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129930987208704,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:23:32.529Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:53:51Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:26:12Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"63a77d49-82d5-4a89-950f-c5cdba1baf45","accessControl_ssim":["9678a420-c293-4727-8bea-99d6c218c5ec"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Language For Effective Preaching Practical Guide For Fidei Donum Priests In The Belleville Diocese"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:53:50Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:02:53Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ddd1d344-5766-4ec3-96a0-740a35163f14"],"hasLease_ssim":["3b12f502-4bc7-4833-98f9-5fc5a9725904"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Preaching"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Joseph Rajpaul Sundararaj D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2020"],"location_tesim":["Illinois","Nigeria"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Urban Chidi Osuji"],"keyword_tesim":["Theory"],"publisher_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["African American preaching","Bible--Homiletic use","Preaching--Study and teaching","Preaching","Bible--Language, style"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["LANGUAGE FOR EFFECTIVE PREACHINGPRACTICAL GUIDE FOR FIDEI DONUM PRIESTSIN BELLEVILLE DIOCESEUrban Osuji, C.M., B.D., M.P.S., D.Min. Aquinas Institute of Theology, St. Louis, Missouri, 2020.Culture as an inherited conception that has to do with what a person learns from the parents and the society about what it means to be a human being. These include the totality of the norms, ways of acting, and understanding that people learn from cradle which helps them know how to fit into the world. As a child grows in the society the child learns the culture’s general assumptions about family relations, relations between men and women, attitude towards life and death. Of all these inherited conceptions, language is the most symbolic of them all. The hypothesis is that Fidei Donum Priests can be effective preachers by attending to the linguistic idioms, imageries, phrases, and sentence construction of the local congregation. The language of preaching is the concrete language of everyday life. Preaching language is the language that the children hear and understand and when they do not understand, as their mothers offer a simpler understanding of the language with stories and imageries. Stories and imageries create and leave impressions on the emotional life of the people. When preachers use stories, imageries, and metaphors in preaching, listeners identify God’s presence in their midst. But the use of concrete language in preaching does not come easy to the missionaries. Therefore, preachers must immerse themselves by taking time to go to the people, live among them, share their lives and learn their language including imageries, metaphors, and stories that have significant value for them. Their choice of words, especially with imageries and metaphors, shows appropriate concern for the effective proclamation of the gospel."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130101613592576,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:26:15.251Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:12:28Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:25:13Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4cdc4a92-546a-4cb1-afd1-fb9b743d9e53","accessControl_ssim":["ab3e121e-4705-41aa-bb02-1aa9bd8d9010"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Good news to the poor: effective preaching through the lens of liberation theology"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:12:27Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:23:36Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e6da5eea-d1f0-4c44-ae24-c6c275f8b461"],"hasLease_ssim":["890b4414-b31f-484f-9fe9-db0954ef831e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["George R Boudreau"],"year_tesim":["2014"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Mark F Bozzuti-Jones"],"keyword_tesim":["Theory"],"publisher_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Liberation theology","Fundamental option (Ethics)","Preaching","Church work with the poor"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Liberation theology offers the preacher a more authentic presence, praxis, and voice. How can we use liberation theology to make our preaching more effective, especially in relation to those who are oppressed?"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130040091541504,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:25:16.579Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:15:06Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:30:24Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d71ac7fc-38ae-4f04-b924-0f4636d1cc8f","accessControl_ssim":["33050e8b-aa6e-4857-94a0-475e013e4d63"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["First, empty your cup: Zen gifts to Christian preachers"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:15:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:16:53Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["07084012-87f5-4755-bd14-57b9aafcab29"],"hasLease_ssim":["a9a0249e-5d2b-489c-8b19-67ba85786914"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Scott Steinkerchner"],"year_tesim":["2010"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Brandon A Nappi"],"keyword_tesim":["Theory"],"publisher_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Negative theology","Zen (Buddhist school)","Communication--Religious aspects--Christianity","Christianity","Preaching","Buddhism"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project explores the contributions that interreligious dialogue between Christianity and Zen Buddhism can make to homiletics. The author examined the ways in which engagement with Zen can enrich Christian preaching by offering contemplative tools that form preachers not merely as transmitters of sacred information but as embodied witnesses of grace who have experienced the Good News that they preach. This study employed qualitative research to examine the reflections of Christians who have assimilated Zen practice into their Christian lives. The author examined the need to reclaim the apophatic and kenotic dimensions of preaching in the development of a vital contemporary homiletic theology."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130365862084608,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:30:27.258Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
