However, they are often unaware of the specifics or the breadth of issues in Catholic Social Teaching beyond topics of gender and sexuality. \r\n\tThis ministerial intervention incorporated a homiletical methodology that combined a collaborative process of sermon preparation, an inductive homiletical plot structure, and a dialogue preaching technique to create a preaching podcast about Catholic Social Teaching for Gen Z. Generation Z college students assisted at every step of the podcast production. Members of Gen Z helped develop the script, record, edit, and publish a podcast about Catholic Social Teaching. The podcast is titled Peace and Good. \r\n\tThis project used questionnaires to collect data about Gen Z college students’ awareness and understanding of Catholic Social teaching. A short post-episode survey collected data on listener engagement during the episode. Delving into the theology of reconciliation, chapter 2, which is the project’s theological framework, lays the groundwork for a biblical and theological understanding of the nonviolent preaching that emerges in the project's interdisciplinary framework in chapter 3. The project’s homiletic foundations presented in Chapter 4 discuss the sermon-dialogue-sermon method to empower preachers to preach well in a divided zone.\r\n\r\nThe training of two priests and a lay person who, in turn, conducted the sermon-dialogue-sermon method in their different contexts tested its hypothesis before twenty men and nineteen women who had deliberative dialogue with them. Chapter 6 describes the thesis project’s identifiable findings through narrative and data analysis, concluding that the Sermon-Dialogue-Sermon Method is proper for the Church to mediate peace in Cameroon. The chapter presents the context of the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary as uniquely suited to the aims of the thesis project: developing the Affective Feedback model which relies upon the spiritual experience of the parishioner-listener as the source of feedback to the seminarian-preacher.\r\n\r\nChapter Two presents the central metaphor of a bridge to explain the theoretical frameworks of the Affective Feedback model. The chapter establishes three theological pillars for this bridge: the pneumatology of the Gift of God, the sensus fidei, and Ignatian affective discernment.\r\n\r\nChapter Three explains how listener-oriented preaching serves as the homiletic suspension cables of the Affective Feedback bridge. The practical ecclesiology of Pope Francis, the inductive preaching homiletic of Fred Craddock, and insights into listener relevance from Karla Bellinger manifest the tensile strength that feedback requires.\r\n\r\nChapter Four introduces interdisciplinary wisdom from communication studies in the business world to establish the deck of the Affective Feedback bridge. In conversation with Douglas Stone, Sheila Heen, and Therese Huston, the chapter lays out the practical theology of effective feedback conversations.\r\n\r\nChapter Five details the Affective Feedback model, this thesis project’s ministerial intervention. The chapter gives thick descriptions of the institutional context, participants, structure, and evaluation of the ministerial intervention.\r\n\r\nChapter Six analyzes the limitations and data of the intervention. Some parishioners complain that priests and deacons are too cerebral and technical in their preaching. Some say the homilies do not address their existential concerns. Consequently, many parishioners leave the Mass without remembering the message of the homily. This thesis project is an invitation to return to how Jesus preached. He used parables to connect with his audience. His listeners remembered his message because of the parables’ vivid, striking, engaging, and memorable nature. Jesus did not only preach in parables; he was a parable of God. A parable points to something beyond itself. In the same way, when Jesus became a human being, he lived among us to point us to God.\r\n\r\nChapter 1 presents an overview of the project, its title, ministry context, the problem it sets to address, its thesis, and purpose. Chapter 2 lays the theological foundation by focusing on Jesus’ Parable-Based Preaching. Chapter 3, the interdisciplinary framework, explores storytelling as a common denominator in human life. In Chapter 4, the homiletic foundation discusses the New Homiletic, emphasizing Dr. Alyce M. McKenzie’s experiential approach to the New Homiletic, Scenic Preaching.\r\n\r\nThe ministerial intervention of this project comes up in Chapter 5, where I taught four preachers in the Diocese of San Diego to use Scenic Preaching in their homilies. I tested the project’s hypothesis through a questionnaire to 37 listeners distributed among four parishes. The questionnaire provided qualitative and quantitative data. Chapter 5 gives the details of the intervention. In Chapter 6, the data from Chapter 5 reveals that when homilists effectively utilize Scenic Preaching, listeners are more engaged and remember the message. \r\n"],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/05482e13-2de0-4c5e-abb8-1e545954b6c6?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["05482e13-2de0-4c5e-abb8-1e545954b6c6"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["05482e13-2de0-4c5e-abb8-1e545954b6c6"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["emmaochigbo2001@yahoo.com"],"_version_":1791130197011988481,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:27:46.230Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:14:28Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:26:15Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"67d99207-e6d6-4b5c-b65b-3a066c54b087","accessControl_ssim":["0fef20ef-dc06-4dbb-85d6-976ef907003a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Reading Short Stories: A Pathway to Captivating Homilies"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:14:27Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:10:18Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["718bed1a-657a-4852-baf7-7d143664d0e6"],"hasLease_ssim":["56e3497b-7c76-4ba6-925b-88a35060dfae"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Preaching"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Gregory Heille D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2023"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Research from several United States Catholic dioceses has shown that parishioners desire to hear engaging homilies when they go to Mass. This author holds that reading a short story a week inspires preachers to adopt short-story traits for their preaching, like unity, brevity, and open-endedness, all of which captivate listeners. This project’s intervention involved qualitative research with five preachers from the Dominican Province of St. Martin de Porres in the southern United States. These preachers were asked to read short stories for twenty-six weeks and to allow their preaching to be evaluated approximately once a month for six months to see if their homilies would become more captivating. In this blind study, the preachers were not cued on what to look for in short stories, and the evaluators were not informed that the preachers were reading short stories. The goal was to see if reading short stories alone was enough to make homilies more captivating. The results from the twenty-six-week intervention showed no clear evidence that reading short stories helped preachers preach captivating homilies, except maybe in the case of one preacher who was already preaching narratively before the intervention began. What is clear from the intervention, however, is that narrative preaching is exceptionally good at captivating people. Further testing is warranted, with such corrections as taking a longer time frame to measure the effects of reading short stories and as preachers being informed about the nature of the intervention and the genre of short stories. The benefit of preaching captivating homilies is that people are more likely to receive the preached message, retain it, and put it into practice."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130105581404160,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:26:19.035Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:54:47Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:29:36Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bd9f3aca-e8ac-401c-aa9c-f137f3c4eb56","accessControl_ssim":["927aafb9-bbd0-4dab-bba4-d381d59fe4d4"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Medicine of Mercy: Preaching on Addiction in the Field Hospital Parish"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:54:46Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:35:32Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a94b3314-2b97-43b1-8054-263b74c3e790"],"hasLease_ssim":["9c9d3f15-47e6-4a0d-aeb9-eba3bef4d612"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Homiletics"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Kay Northcutt D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2022"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Fought, Eric"],"publisher_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Catholic Church","Church work with addicts","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["In the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, statistics related to the ongoing crisis of addiction in the United States hit record levels. Those statistics include drug overdose deaths, rates of substance use and misuse, and alcohol-related fatalities. Some Christian denominations and individual congregations, including a handful of Roman Catholic parishes, have sought to respond to the suffering experienced by those in active addiction through intentional ministries of care, support, and community. Yet preaching on the topic of addiction—and the hope found in recovery—remains rare in churches on Sunday morning. This thesis explores the complex and confounding realities of addiction, its causes, and multiple pathways to recovery, while articulating an urgent and salient call for Roman Catholic priests and deacons to address the crisis of addiction in their midst. The primary ministerial intervention for the thesis consisted of a one-day workshop for Roman Catholic priests and permanent deacons in Minnesota. Pre-workshop interviews were conducted with two cohorts: ten priests and permanent deacons in active ministry (Cohort One), and ten practicing Catholics in recovery from addiction (Cohort Two). The interviews considered whether preaching on the topic of addiction and recovery was taking place in Roman Catholic parishes around the country and what might be most helpful or harmful for people in recovery or in active addiction to hear from preaching in their parishes. Chapter 1 introduces the thesis project overall.Chapter 2 considers addiction theologically, focusing on three areas of study: sacramentality; sin, grace, and the unconditional love of God; and trauma-informed or trauma-sensitive theology. Chapter 3 explores the importance of story, specifically in the salvific and life-giving tradition of twelve-step storytelling and in the inductive practice of narrative preaching in the style of the New Homiletic. Chapter 4 provides a detailed exploration of addiction, considering clinical diagnostic criteria, neurological and sociological research, and current trends regarding the prevalence of stigma and challenges to achieving recovery for many. It considers the impact it has had on the Catholic Church in the United States as a whole as well as some specific generations.Chapter 4 offers an in-depth explanation of the acronym “BREATHE” and how each characteristic of that acronym should inform our preaching. It also loosely corresponds each letter to the seven different stages of growth toward missionary discipleship.Chapter 5 and its subsequent appendices provide the statistical data of one Catholic parish where the acronym was implemented in a five-week preaching exercise to reach the most Catholics possible in that one setting. It then considers the response and how that aligns with the statistical data found in chapter three.Chapter 6 offers conclusions to the thesis overall and a recommendation of how to move forward while acknowledging the limitations of this one exercise and the importance of an overall plan to form and send the average parishioner into the world to bring more souls to Christ."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130131105841152,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:26:43.377Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:32:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:23:46Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"148152d2-7d74-4bf9-94c7-a91b2ec40fde","accessControl_ssim":["f9a62a89-e6b3-4574-9030-058fecb1b903"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching Christ From Vietnamese Proverbs And Folk Poetry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:31:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:43:42Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["66cc761e-e2eb-490d-be35-cd6182f42c93"],"hasLease_ssim":["2d7e53ad-6a46-49d7-bf5e-3649c0f61cce"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Homiletics"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Hy K. In professing and living their marriage vows, Christian married couples proclaim Christ’s love in word and action—for each other and the church and the world. This study provides the theological foundation for marriage as one of the seven ritualized sacraments in the Catholic Church. It draws on the Christ/church/sacrament model espoused by Vatican II theologians showing Christian husbands and wives to be the efficacious word of God spoken to each other and the church and world. It explores the church's evolving theology of marriage by surveying civil and liturgical rites of marriage from the church’s beginning to present time. This thesis connects the married couple’s call to bear witness with the church’s preaching mission by attending to Scripture, church teaching, and preachers to show that husbands and wives who faithfully live their marriage vows through the entirety of their lives together, preach the kingdom of God in word and action from the pulpit of their everyday lives. It gathers wisdom from the discipline of marriage and family counseling, attends to practices that assist married couples to be more efficacious preachers of Christ’s love and notes destructive communication patterns that cause them to be countersign of Christ’s love. A description of the ministerial intervention is provided: a day of reflection, formation, and conversation for newly married couples based on the Rite of Marriage. It includes a compilation and analysis of data from three participant questionnaires: pre-workshop, end-of-workshop-day, and thirty days later. The thesis concludes by establishing why this study matters to the church and offers possible next steps for the future of this study."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130452940029952,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:31:50.302Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:12:13Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:24:55Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"43cb137e-bc08-4df9-8fd2-34cfe13d86c0","accessControl_ssim":["0c32cf76-d537-4d39-a0a4-028cb98f4b34"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Connoisseurship: Using Adult Learning To Engage Preaching In Deacon Formation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:12:12Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:06:01Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["39d4a745-2fec-4280-b9f0-e47a3f29a4fb"],"hasLease_ssim":["2470f7d3-5c25-4ee1-a79f-db777d62a127"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Preaching"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Deborah L Wilhelm D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2021"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Bernardin, Cynthia Bavaria"],"publisher_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Catholic Church","Theology, Practical","Christian education--Teaching methods","Clergy--Training of","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis project offers a reflective practice-based learning tool to engage preaching experience—from the hearing side of the event—early in diaconal formation to build connoisseurship of effective preaching as the logical prerequisite to engaging the event as preacher. Chapter One proposes connoisseurship as a fruitful metaphor for building an appreciation for what makes for effective and transformative preaching with its slow, steady, and ongoing practice of tasting and reflecting. Chapter Two invites adult learning theory—and the burgeoning field of transformative learning theory born of it—into the conversation to inform both the structure and content of the reflective practice pages that are the building blocks of the thesis project intervention. In conversation with the National Directory for the Formation, Ministry, and Life of Permanent Deacons in the United States, the chapter offers a preliminary list of key principles salient to the pedagogical design of the project intervention. Chapter Three brings in the lens of practical theology with its consistent starting point in everyday lived practice and experience to sharpen the focus toward the deep faith context of this thesis project. The faith practices of preaching within the context of Eucharist and teaching preaching within the context of a deacon formation program suggest additional site-specific pedagogical concerns. The elements of a site-specific instructional design are now in place. Chapter Four details the thesis project learning intervention. The chapter outlines the purpose and process of the preparatory research that resulted in the project catalogue of characteristics and quotations, and it provides a thick description of diaconal formation in the Diocese of Evansville, with special attention to the role of Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology, Evansville’s partner in diaconal formation. An annotated example of a weekly reflective practice page and an analysis of its components relative to the site-specific pedagogical principles proposed in Chapter Three completes the chapter.Chapter Five presents and analyzes the qualitative data collected over the twenty-three weeks of the project with respect to both aggregate and individual participant trajectories toward connoisseurship of effective preaching. The chapter observes and interprets four consistent themes, notes limitations, offers recommendations for further research, and imagines next steps."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130020761042944,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:24:58.144Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
