The first chapter lays the foundation for Visio Divina by surveying the history and seminal literature of Lectio Divina and the use of sacred art within the tradition of the Church. The second chapter sees the prayer practices of Lectio Divina and Visio Divina being integrated into a methodology for preaching preparation. The third chapter demonstrates, through five preaching cases, how the incorporation of Visio Divina can become part of the preaching preparation process that includes not only the preacher but parish Partners-in-Preaching groups. The thesis explained that the baptized and confirmed are a people set apart to 'proclaim his virtues.' (1 Pt 2:9). Four specific practices of the preaching habitus; lectio divinia, congregational analysis, biblical criticism and rhetoric were explained in detail. A test workshop was conducted in which the practices were applied to the formation of catechists. The results of the application methods, obtained through qualitative research, are revealed in chapter four. The Introduction explains the writer's discovery of using stories in preaching and critical incidents, which led to the thesis and project. Chapter One begins with an understanding of the use of story in preaching. Story finds its power in shared human experience. The narrative inductive art form of preaching is explored. The flexible application of the narrative method is relationally experienced. It addresses the fractures encountered in life, the loops we are thrown into, and the God who delivers us. Chapter Two presents an introduction to Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) and the understanding of the CISM principles. This chapter examines crisis, CISM techniques, models of crisis intervention and the use of story in crisis intervention. Chapter Three defines the three functions of story: remembering, reconciling, and redeeming. This chapter introduces the 3 R's paradigm model through the use of story in preaching and crisis intervention. Examples illustrate the paradigm's effectiveness in preaching and crisis intervention. Chapter Four describes and presents the workshop. The workshop brought preachers and crisis interventionists together to enhance their use of story in their respective fields. Included in the appendix is the workshop handbook. This chapter assesses both qualitatively and quantitatively the effectiveness of the workshop. The thesis project workshop was designed, using music listening exercises along with the kinetic experience of creating visual art, to determine if the imagination can be stimulated to craft more vibrant sermons in a persuasive rhetoric of pathos. Quantitative research evaluation, experienced by evaluating the preaching in the workshop and further in participant interviews, revealed that this workshop stimulated the preachers to use musical language and vivid imagery, supporting the purpose of the thesis. It would appear that similar workshops might be very helpful for use in the preparation of seminary students of homiletics, or an ongoing gathering of clergy colleagues. Father Judge promoted a particular spirituality to support his missionary movement. He centered that spirituality on a 'devotional knowledge' of the major mysteries of the faith, particularly devotion to the Trinity. This study creates a dialogue between the charism of Father Judge and the work of contemporary theology. Theological developments are shown to supplement and support the founding insight of the Cenacle charism. The study tested the effectiveness of the preaching through a questionnaire both before and after the preaching. The patient's stories and experiences are valuable resource materials that can be utilized in the preparation and delivery of more effective homilies to the hospital community. In most churches, Sunday homilies do not effectively address the problems of the sick. Most Sunday homilies address the moral, social, economic, and political problems of the healthy members of the churches. This thesis is aimed at improving pastoral care ministry of the sick. This pastoral approach will provide a homiletical guide for preachers, pastors, and chaplains involved in hospital, hospice, and nursing home ministries. In order to test whether the integration of patients' stories in sermons makes a difference in how preaching is received by patients in a hospital setting, three homilies without patients' stories and three with patients' stories were preached to patients. The method of testing was with questionnaires designed to provide opportunities to patients to express how they felt about the homilies. Apart from using questionnaires, face-to-face conversations between the pastoral minister and patients were also provided.
