The data confirmed that people do not attend because preachers appear to be seeking emotional responses during preaching, members are not friendly and welcoming, leadership caters to a particular group, and the extreme concern with collecting money. This project brought together sixteen individuals in ten weekly sessions of training in and practicing of lectio divina. Although lectio divina worked as expected, the discovery of the overwhelming need among this group for community proved to be an unexpected asset in the quest for renewed spiritual vitality. Responses of 104 African-American participants from a large Midwestern city indicated that interpersonal issues were a major factor.  Personal issues also played an important role in people leaving the church.  A large segment (45.2%) of the participants said that nothing could have been done to keep them.
