There is no way of being human without participating in culture, for it is through culture that human community is created. This dissertation is a study of the work of 19th century missionaries into Chinland, Union of Burma. An evaluation of the data shows that these missionaries were not sensitive enough to the indigenous culture and tradition of the Chin. A series of seven sessions using guided imagery revealed that this method did make the members more aware of God in their daily lives and activities, in relationships, in worship, and in their resolution of conflict. Responses of 104 African-American participants from a large Midwestern city indicated that interpersonal issues were a major factor.  Personal issues also played an important role in people leaving the church.  A large segment (45.2%) of the participants said that nothing could have been done to keep them. Anonymous self-mailing surveys were sent to all current Brethren pastors using a list of core values, and open questions about methods of expression and values priority.  These pastors were then asked to distribute self-mailing survey to three laypeople in their context.  These surveys were then analyzed for significant differences.  Statistically significant differences were found in the methods of values expression and in values priority, with 52 pastors reporting expressions and priorities that reflected a professional perspective of ministry, and 111 laypeople perceiving expressions and priorities that reflected a relational perspective of ministry. In a world of rapid change we must switch to a different way of reaching them.  This project proposes that small groups are a fruitful method of meeting deep needs.  I studied a small group that met seven times over a period of six weeks to study building relationship, prayer and spiritual growth.  The findings confirm that small groups are a method that significantly meets the need of relationships, increases prayer and aids in spiritual growth.  Some significant findings show that there was a 67% increase in spiritual growth due to the need for input and involvement from others in a small group setting.  This is consistent with John Wesley's model for small groups.  There was an increase of fifty percent in the understanding of true community after a small group experience. This demonstrates the need for close relationships and the desire for personal accountability.  In order for this project to make an impact, transformation needs to take place.  Robert Quinn, in his book, Change the World, says that 'transforming a human system usually means we transform ourselves' (Quinn 2000, 4). This project introduced the lectio divina methodology to 25 actively serving pastors of the Northern Ohio District of the Church of the Brethren in an attempt to elevate the sense of God's presence in their lives. There was a pre-questionnaire message followed by the first questionnaire on the first Sunday.  Then there were four Sundays with the four main messages, followed by a post-series message with the second questionnaire on the sixth Sunday.
