The author examines the major cultural and philosophical themes of postmodernism through the lens of popular music. Two common evangelical responses to postmodernism are appraised. A defense of evangelism is offered, based on Christian realism and the ontologically unique claims of Christ. Lesslie Newbigin's model of contextually-appropriate mission, as the encounter between Gospel, culture and church, is commended as an alternative to non-foundational pluralism. The author concludes with ten guidelines for relational, community-based narrative evangelism."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135117566017536,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:45:58.836Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:39:18Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:45:59Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"35a34b98-6bdc-4629-9872-1d58bdc250fa","accessControl_ssim":["0c5f6446-eca5-4b57-b804-ce5096cda2ea"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching for discipleship in postmodernity: the problem of authority"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:39:17Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:40:48Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["35ebc9b1-f9aa-4671-bced-1383172d123c"],"hasLease_ssim":["132f25a3-fb0d-4af0-8503-da6c5a871e04"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Scott Black Johnston"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Reed E Jaboro"],"publisher_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Craddock, Fred B","Postmodernism","Ambiguity","Preaching","Tracy, David W"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The relationship between the preacher and the listener has changed dramatically over the past fifty years. Postmodern philosophers of language have elucidated the idea that the reader or listener hold many of the keys to authority rather than the author or speaker as was previously espoused. Thus, this project seeks to explore the important role that context plays upon the way preachers go about attending to their task of communicating in the postmodern era. The project explores Fred Craddock's thesis regarding the inductive method of preaching and its continued viability. The project also examines the sociological issues impacting the preacher who would speak a word into the postmodern situation. The three models are: science vs religion; science as religion; and religion or theology as science. There is, then, a discussion of the dialogue past, present, and a suggested future of the dialogue. The heart of the project is the theological integration of the concepts and ideas that come from the literature together with reflection upon these by the author. The most important thread for future reflection is the concept of dialogue within the postmodern setting. It is in the postmodern world that security and truth can be part of religion as well as science. With the realization that even science is a set of relative truths, humankind can be free of the need for certainty as such. This freedom can lead us to even greater horizons of security within the truth of the faith. Our freedom from the need for certainty in religious truths can allow humankind to be free to say the 'yes' to all creation that creation's God empowered us to say."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135260718661633,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:48:15.357Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:58:14Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:47:38Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"642bf446-a3f0-4722-a432-d90c5ef92f2b","accessControl_ssim":["ffbc9d2c-1c70-4da8-8d29-4e4a45284820"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Church's one foundation: embracing a decentering God"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:58:13Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:03:50Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a57d3fcf-f417-4b88-b9de-766bd670c312"],"hasLease_ssim":["c3a17805-f9fb-4897-819d-fb5cf29a8ed1"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Cynthia L Rigby"],"year_tesim":["2000"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Michael W Ensrude"],"publisher_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Postmodernism","Barth, Karl, 1886-1968","Theology","Image of God"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The Church's popular 'user-friendly' paradigm is in danger of defining God in its own image.
