The project required research in the area of group dynamics as this writer had to lead in a dialogue process with a group of congregational leaders. In addition to recounting that particular experience, the essay seeks to generalize from it as well. Christianity's incarnational character, the bodily Resurrection of the One in whom, by whom, and for whom everything was created, makes God, humans, and the material world inseparable.  As such, the Christian God is the first, true environmentalist.  In this understanding, theology must respond to environmental concerns. The relationship between ecology and theology was explored within a small Christian community, the place where the Living God can be experienced and where ecological disasters occur. Its theological justification comes from the fact that pastor and laity alike share in the shepherding ministry of Jesus Christ in the church.  To both equip my present lay shepherds in the 'basics' of pastoral care and to motivate them to train, in turn, still more shepherds, I proceeded as follows: I led ten of these lay shepherds through a series of eight 'shepherding seminars' on the biblical/theological justifications for giving pastoral care; the four 'givens' of human life; the ten stages of grief; the differentiation of different types of depression; and the development of empathetic listening skills. At the conclusion of these studies, each of the now 'trained' shepherds was assigned some aspect of the aforementioned topics and asked to teach it to a small cadre of 'untrained' shepherds newly recruited from the congregation at large. To clarify the author's views, the work of six theologians across their denominational persuasions was studied.  The study revealed that published positions of the theologians did not differ as much as current practices among various churches.  After a biblical study on the Holy Spirit and the selected literature of the theologians had been reviewed, the author wrote an essay presenting his own views enriched by this study.  The mainline churches and the new Pentecostal churches need each other, so that no aspect of the work and nature of the Holy Spirit will be neglected or over-emphasized. What is needed is balance and openness. We especially need an understanding that the Holy Spirit shapes the church and not the church the Holy Spirit.
