From the perspective of a chaplain in a health care setting--Brooke Army Medical Center--care of the soul is an important element in the birthing, recovery, or dying of a patient. In any one of these situations prayers and blessings provide a vehicle for healing and transformation. In a Reformed understanding the relation between daily prayer and the Lord's Day service is strengthened by the biblical invitation to pray without ceasing; by the Lord's Prayer, which demonstrates that private prayers are never merely individual; and by a relationship with Jesus through his resurrection. The project analyzes each text with particular attention to its point of entry into the discussion: does the text use Scripture to interpret experience or experience to interpret Scripture? J B Phillips's Your God Is Too Small offers guidelines for development of adequate models and a critical understanding of inadequate models. The project then analyzes the apostle Paul's leadership style in order to formulate a model of early church leadership.  Confessions and governmental style of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) are analyzed to determine the Presbyterian Church's understanding of Christian leadership.  Practical examples of leadership are drawn from the parish using a project funded by the Lilly Foundation to illustrate leadership issues in the local congregation.  The project concludes with a guide to understanding and developing Christian leadership. Numerous anecdotes and stories reflecting 15 years of ministry help bridge the biblical witness with contemporary life in the church.  Study questions at the end of each chapter aid personal reflection and group discussion.
