In response to this problem the researcher conducted an in-depth qualitative study of self-measurement tools in which he compared these tools to a biblical gauge for self-measurement.  He then led ten undergraduate students through a semester-long discipleship program that centered on the tests that he deemed most appropriate. Because the emphasis of their education and practice is on the needs of their patients and families, these students often have little time to reflect on the profound theological questions that suffering evokes.  This project addresses the concern that in the process of dealing with profound suffering in their patients, nursing students do not receive adequate support for their own spiritual formation.  Using phenomenological methodology, eleven senior baccalaureate nursing students were interviewed about their experiences with patients who were suffering.  The results of the interviews were analyzed, and four themes emerged: the importance of preparation, the need to acknowledge the reality of the situation, the significance of obtaining support, and the necessity of self care.
