The Index of General Affect was used to measure caregiver satisfaction with caregiving encounters before and after training that included bio-medical information on Alzheimer's type dementia and religious symbol re-presentation (based on Susanne Langer's theories). Contrary to expectations, satisfaction scores were high after the initial encounter and declined significantly after both types of presentation. One way to respond to these changes would be for local churches to support chaplaincy services in hospitals and institutions.  Using a survey of local clergy and church members, this project assesses the perceived need for, value of, and role expectations of hospital chaplains at the Malden Hospital, Malden, Massachusetts, and the willingness of local churches to support chaplaincy services. Medicine and psychology treat physical and psychological problems. Pastoral care ought to include more than sacramental care for adult Catholic cardiac victims as these people and their families need to recover their religious health.  The model offers descriptions of the categories of heart disease which suggest the type of affective problems in need of treatment in the patient and in the family.  The knowledge helps the pastor to plan the pastoral therapy to include the appropriate theory of personality and behavior to treat negative problems already in consciousness. The context of the project was a three week clinical course in hospital ministry based on the pastoral counseling theories of Adams, Hiltner, and Clinebell and Carl Rogers' ideas.  The results from the project revealed a bell-shaped pattern of change. This project report defines whole person medicine and traces biblical and historical precedents for the church's involvement in such an approach to health care.  Research material is drawn from interviews with 31 physicians and from personal experiences in dealing with cancer.  Material is included for a four-week seminar titled: 'Your faith and your health'.  Five sermons are also included. Patients from Florida Hospital Family Health Center completed the Religiosity Coping Index.
