An initial chapter examines the historical and cultural context of Boston and New England.  The invitation process and the complex organization of the crusade is detailed.  The effect of the crusade is measured by close analysis of questionnaires returned from ministers and lay leaders of churches who participated.  Returned questionnaires from inquirers reveal the motivations for attending and responding to the evangelist's invitation. Traditional evangelical women exemplify how patriarchal paradigms prevent women from finding their voices.  Pat Schneider's creative writing program was used in a spiritual growth workshop.  The women participants described the difficulties of having a voice amidst both their church's patriarchal authority and their internal struggles with their role as women.  As the workshop concluded the women reported experiencing some personal growth.
