Two groups of elderly persons participated in the study: one living independently in the community and the other receiving volunteer services of a coalition organization of faith communities.  Needs identified were depression, fear, anxiety, loneliness, anger, guilt and lack of belief after death. This volunteer staff is solicited from nearly one hundred churches and Christian women's groups, and represents an attempt to involve the local community of faith in a social service program of truly ecumenical proportions.  Chapters include the justification for the church's participation in the program, the actual planning and implementation of the volunteer staff, and final evaluations of the effort.
