Theological reflections are provided for a theology of a bereavement.  A liturgy preparation guide and a parish support group are outlined.  Conclusions from pastoral interviews and presentations are cited. These retreats were designed and implemented to enable in care students in the Connecticut Conference of the United Church of Christ to identify and critically evaluate familial and psychological factors which have both influenced their call to ministry and the development of a pastoral identity and contributed to their prospective effectiveness as pastors.  The autobiographical and reflective data which has been shared by the participants has been organized around and is used to illustrate three significant thematic expressions of the nature and effect of those factors. Feelings, activities, and reasons for retirement were considered and included: anticipation of freedom from the schedule of meetings and other time-intensive demands; expectations to continue their calling as ministers in some way; and satisfaction in retirement related to collegiality if practiced in active ministry.  The author suggests that all levels of church governing bodies reconsider their policies and programs for the retirement of ministers. Decision making as systematic process can be learned.  Intentionally sharing this comprehensive process, including theology and ethics, improves relationships and produces effective choices.  The author presented the decision making process found in Acts 15, Presbyterian polity, management principles, and systems theory to two church sessions.  Participants shared mind style preferences, analyzed decisions theologically and rationally, and explored systems issues.  The separation of process from content helped clarify leadership dynamics. Shared process produced solid, satisfying decisions. Pastors cited improved communication and coordination. Statistical analysis indicated preference for participatory style. Questionnaires and personal interviews provide basic information. The results indicate the necessary ingredients of effective shared ministry. The author sees shared ministry as holding both the possibilities for exceptional service and demoralized apathy among pastors.  He exposes the ideals of the call to ministry, the ministry of all Christians, collegiality and the recognition of personality traits and leadership styles. Working agreements are seen as a necessity in this process.
