A pre-test and post-test was administered on two representative groups of fifteen members of First Christian Church.  The experimental group was given four lectures on Campbell's pacifism in addition to a series of peace sermons.  The control group heard only the sermons. This interrelationship is illustrated by the dissociative disorder core metaphor (DDCM) model developed in this doctoral thesis.  This theo-psychological model combines insights from object relations theory, formation of God images, self psychology, cognitive science, faith development, and metaphorical theology. This neglect is reflective of a certain dualism that separates the material from the spiritual, and one that pervades American culture.  This thesis argues that the dualism regarding wealth and material possessions is counter to Judeo-Christian theology. A survey was developed to score degree of incorporation and assess the effectiveness of various programs through which new members could become incorporated.  Results were crosstabulated by gender, age, and scored degree of incorporation.  Analysis was done by comparing the results of members who joined by profession of faith, transferred from other United Methodist congregations, transferred from other denominations, and associate/affiliate membership. The thesis employs a methodology of oral history using as informants indigenous Methodist women.  It contains stories of Meru women who have borne the gospel to homes, families, villages, schools, and helped found churches and Christian movements. In 1989 questionnaires were distributed to ninety-nine United Methodist clergywomen and seminary students in southern New England.  Twenty-nine were returned completed.  Six interviews were conducted. The study, through the use of a variety of instruments, examines adjustments, critical incidents and surprises experienced by new pastors and how these affect their competency to be effective leaders.  The study makes a number of suggestions to future graduates and to parishes, seminaries, judicatories (diocese and archdiocese) to assist them in making this adjustment and transition.
