Shalom is defined in its usage as a biblical, theological, and homiletical motif.  Ten key points are offered for preaching shalom to Congregations of Civility without the preacher becoming alienated from such congregations. Preaching the stories of shalom is then examined as an effective means of fulfilling these ten key points, and four sample sermons are offered which incorporate this technique. The research of the author and the responses of the group indicate that not only is there an absence of preaching about death from the pulpit today, but the people in the pews desire words of hope in a world which denies death.
