It is a crisis of survival and also identity. So this project helps a congregation see a bigger picture. By helping a church discover, engage with, and celebrate its history, it strengthens a sense of identity in the present, and better positions the church to walk into its future. Through proven techniques of narrative therapy and Family Systems Theory, this project leads a congregation to increase in self-awareness, emotional maturity, and a knowledge of its own story. The local congregation, which once enjoyed a position of social, moral and ethical influence upon quotidian societal decision-making, has become a marginal (peripheral) and often an ignored participant. In what appears as an oscillating wave of interest/disinterest, the greatest challenge for the church today has become the ability to recognize these changes and to respond missionally as the people of God. After conducting research into the Baptist heritage of religious freedom, the author conducted educational events in five Baptist congregations in southeastern North Carolina in which he shared part of the Baptist story in this regard.
