The goal was both to nurture the couples' maturity in faith and to enrich their marriage relationship.  Eight couples met weekly for three months. They reflected on Scripture, tradition, experience and reason as four sources of authority for Christian faith, and on the image of covenant as the central symbol of Christian marriage. The study consists of a review of pertinent literature in the field of preaching, an examination of taped and published sermons, interviews with colleagues and four sessions with a committee of laypersons.  The study results in a set of guidelines for pastors on the use of personal material in sermons.  A committee of laypersons evaluates the initial guidelines with respect to clarity, organization and face validity.
