His thesis is that the preferential option for the poor is required of all Christian ministry and theology today, particularly in the 'first world.'  Using ethnographic methods, the research setting is a ministry with homeless men in Chicago.  Beginning from this ministry praxis the author moves to consideration of the larger socio-historical context and then to reflection on biblical sources and Christian tradition. It is based on principles of practical theology, using experiences of workers with Servants to Asia's Urban Poor, partnering with squatters in metro-Manila, Philippines.  These experiences are brought into critical correlation with the Christian tradition and the context of the urban poor.
