The result may be the establishment of a nationwide age for the reception confirmation. This project proposes an examination of the age for reception of confirmation programs in four parishes of the Diocese of Joliet and an analysis of the theological and historical development of confirmation. The nature of this thesis-project is to explore and enhance the Eucharistic spirituality of liturgical ministers in the context of a retreat. A praxis-theory-praxis model of theological reflection based on the method of Thomas Groome is employed. Current spirituality is named and critiqued by the metaphor of the Eucharist as gift-exchange. This use of this metaphor is a theologically sound image capable of enhancing the religious imaginations of those who serve their liturgical assemblies. The mutual critical dialogue among the three sources resulted in recommendations for a renewed ministry to parishioners in behalf of spirituality. Two basic themes out of which the recommendations were generated were: 1) the image of the Church as a community of disciples, and 2) small faith communities. Chapter two focuses on mid-life and faith development theories. Chapter three contains student and alumni survey data. Chapter four brings the components into dialogue. The Rite envisions, during the Period of the Catechumenate, a kind of apprenticeship for catechumens and candidates, focusing on instruction, prayer, community and formation in apostolic activity. This thesis project focuses on three parishes with three very different approaches to the Period of the Catechumenate. Groome's method of 'shared Christian praxis' is used, in combination with Spradley's methodology for ethnographic fieldwork, as well as Holland and Henriot's tools for social analysis. Favoring the insiders' perspective, it explores needs assessment and participant observation as tools for initial (outsider) pastoral listening in a Mexicano Catholic immigrant faith community in southern Colorado. Through a critical review of leadership research and a word study, it relates stakeholder findings to Joseph Rost's relational concept of leadership, as well as to Ronald Heifetz's leadership task of promoting adaptive change. The methodology is derived from a process proposed by James and Evelyn Whitehead in Method in Ministry. The argument is made that Anglicans should be provided the same access to Roman Catholic Eucharistic communion as that provided to members of the Orthodox churches. Alternatively, it is argued that Anglicans be invited to receive Eucharistic communion at specific Roman Catholic liturgies that they are invited to attend, including marriages, funerals, and baptisms.
