Boards of directors governing their sponsored ministries are charged with assuring their mission and spiritual heritage continues to permeate corporate life. This study contributes to illumining boards' collaborative participation in expressing charism through mission, as it affects their service, and sponsors' own understanding of their charism. Engaging practical theological methodology, it brings the charism and mission of one congregation into conversation with current board leadership literature and with contextual experience of boards. Using participation observation and interviews, it analyses two types of parish prayer groups, which embody the separate inculturation of the gospel into indigenous Fijian and Indo-Fijian cultures, and finds them inadequate. It uses the semiotics of culture to articulate a model of theological reflection appropriate to the Anishinaabe people, using the medicine wheel as the root metaphor for the Anishinaabe worldview. The thesis includes the Anishinaabe historical and cultural context. As interviews from hospital chaplains converse with recent research on negative faith coping, and with St. Thérèse of Lisieux's experience of pulmonary tuberculosis and a trial of faith during her last eighteen months, chronicled in Story of a Soul, twelve themes emerge. Through ethnographic study, research of church traditions and teaching, the author engaged the operative theologies of local people in critical correlation with the heritage of the US Black Church and Catholic tradition.
