Preaching a lament opens listeners to deal with the real issues that burden them.  This thesis proposes specifically the reclaiming of the psalms of lament in preaching following the homiletic design for celebration of Frank Thomas.  With this integration the preacher is both the leader of lament and celebrant of God's presence. Drawing upon ritual theory and the work of Augusto Boal and his Theatre of the Oppressed, the author has presented sermons incorporating embedded ritualization inviting people to a transformative experience of God. Feedback to these sermons was solicited in order to measure the effectiveness of the embedded ritualization in opening the listeners to an experience of God. An urban congregation participated in a two-year study to change its understanding and experience of communion from being individual-centered to being community-centered. Results indicate that, over time, this effort may lead to a change in the congregational mythos and identity. Through careful attention to and practice of voice, facial expressions, and body movements, a preacher can not only increase the effectiveness of their sermons, but a preacher can also find their own voice in preaching.  This conclusion was reached following two years of work on the performative aspects of preaching. The thesis is based on Paul Ricoeur's linguistic theory of distanciation: standing before the text, the congregation and preacher can find new meaning.  The methodology encourages imagination in preaching and a genuine dialogue between the congregation and scripture.  It also illustrates Don S. A case is made in this paper for preaching as reflection to constitute an applicable homiletical model for a postmodern, post-theistic, and progressive theological context.  This model was developed over a three-year period, grounded in preaching projects which were designed and tested in a diverse, multi-generational, affirming congregation of the United Church of Canada.  Drawing on two projects and eight program sermons undertaken as part of the writer's studies in the ACTS D. Min. in preaching program, this paper describes how a conversational homiletic, a homiletic of hospitality, and a collaborative homiletic can provide the essential elements for preaching as reflection. Further, this work demonstrates how preaching as reflection sets a spacious table which values diversity, honors experience, is inspired by a variety of different sources, and practices genuine hospitality. From the preaching of eight sermons in a medium-sized RCA church in central New Jersey, the project identified elements that help people to learn Bible passages heretofore unknown to them, including a sermon style matching the genre of the text, re-contextualization, functional equivalence, and the passion of the preacher. A theological and hermeneutical case is made for the use of a conversational homiletic and the tested in a congregational setting. Included are sermons based on 'texts' from the arts placed in conversation with biblical texts preached in an urban congregation. Parishioners verified the validity of the project thesis through group and individual discussion and a congregational survey.
