Culture can pose a stumbling block insofar as it directs how we communicate, think, behave, and perceive things. The first generation Korean pastors experience racial and cultural collisions when they serve cross-racial/cross-cultural appointments. With adequate preparation, however, cross-racially/cross-culturally appointed clergy to this service can provide the bridge between two cultures. They can mediate between the cultures. The thesis is that this growth requires a shared ministry of pastoral care and counseling.  This project uses interviews with ministers and congregants in Unitarian Universalist churches of this size in Southern California but could be adapted to churches of other sizes and faith traditions. This disruptive change causes people to become 'transient.'  It is ultimately up to the transient to make a decision about what needs to be done, but at times it is very difficult to know what one must do.  The pastoral counselor becomes an important person who can help clarify options.  This is a case study of a Marine who received a bad conduct discharge from the US Marine Corps after being accused of being the instigator of his own accident.  His behavior became antisocial. Weaving together theologies of erotic power and psychological models of relational selves, the author develops a model of a centering self in mutual relation around themes of agency, empowerment, integrity, embodiment, inner space, boundaries, mutuality and difference. The method of research integrates material from the author's experience of twenty-two years of military service, thirteen years of ordained ministry, and experience from personal involvement in Adult Children of Alcoholics.  Short-term prevention methods suggested are regulating the supply of alcoholic beverages, shaping drinking practices directly, and reducing environmental risk.
