Because stories and storytelling are integral parts of our psychology, narrative theology offers a particularly powerful way of illustrating and teaching important Christian doctrine.  It is important to note that stories should never be summarized or reduced to a 'core meaning' when used for teaching or pastoral care and counseling, as this runs the risk of allowing the storyteller's own views and prejudices to overpower the deeper meaning of the story itself.  For this reason, all narrative theology should be based on the unabridged, unadulterated story in its purest form. Theologies of the cross, by emphasizing the suffering and death of Jesus, run the risk of condoning abusive behavior and portray Jesus Christ as a figure who intentionally seeks suffering and death as part of the act of redemption, minimizing the responsibility of the repressive society that demanded his death.  By emphasizing obedience to the Lord, these theologies can serve to maintain an oppressive status quo at the cost of innocent life.  The project argues that a more healthy theology can be formulated based on the psychoanalytical theory of individuation, as formulated by Carl G. Jung.  Bu using the example of 'The Story of Shim Cheong,' the dissertation shows how traditional, life-affirming tales can be distorted to serve the ends of a repressive patriarchal society.  Sacrifice is not something we can demand a person to offer solely for the benefit of others. A true sacrifice can only come from someone who has reached the goal of individuation.  It must be motivated by love and always serves to strengthen and enrich the giver. The author combines practical suggestions for contextual preaching with perspectives from theological, missiological, biblical, and cultural studies. He claims that preaching is more effective when it is rooted in the context of the audience. The author illustrates this claim by analyzing four sermon samples, which embody some aspects of the religio-cultural ethos and communication forms of the Yoruba. The thesis is that this growth requires a shared ministry of pastoral care and counseling.  This project uses interviews with ministers and congregants in Unitarian Universalist churches of this size in Southern California but could be adapted to churches of other sizes and faith traditions. Instead, it has tended to rely upon approaches which focus primarily on conveying information, especially that which is distinctive to Adventism, leaving spiritual formation to somehow occur as a by-product. This project proposes a practice-based approach to the process of preparing people for membership in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. This approach is primarily designed around spiritual practices, but it also provides for the full engagement of the church's fundamental doctrinal beliefs. Drawing from the works of Clifford Geertz, Alasdair MacIntyre, Craig Dykstra, Dorothy Bass, Miroslav Volf, and their colleagues, a model of spiritual practices is developed and explained. This model is then placed in conversation with approaches currently in use by Seventh-day Adventists. As a part of this dialogue, pastors in the Southeastern California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists are surveyed to surface areas of concurrence with, or resistance to, the idea of a practice-centered approach. Next, possibilities are explored for developing an approach that would suggest a list of practices central to Seventh-day Adventist experience, which, when engaged, would also provide a context for reflecting upon the fundamental points of church doctrine.
