This project attempts to shift that emphasis by drawing on indigenous Hawaiian spirituality, Buddhism, and Christianity to construct a worship experience that is both spiritually and culturally relevant to the local people of Hawai'i. Process-relational theology serves as the foundation or basis under-girding the worship experience. The methodology used combines Participatory Action Research (PAR) method and praxis-reflection. Culture can pose a stumbling block insofar as it directs how we communicate, think, behave, and perceive things. The first generation Korean pastors experience racial and cultural collisions when they serve cross-racial/cross-cultural appointments. With adequate preparation, however, cross-racially/cross-culturally appointed clergy to this service can provide the bridge between two cultures. They can mediate between the cultures. Yet, in this vision there is encountered a non-discursive link between salvation, enlightenment, and transformative experience in general. Thus there are significant implications in this elusive quality for various modes of artistic expression as well as for inter-religious dialogue and understanding. The Korean immigrants have experienced great growth since they first came to Hawaii in 1903. The Korean church in America has also undergone tremendous growth. First of all, this study presents the history of Korean immigration to the United States and the accompanying growth of the church in various stages from 1903 to the present. In addition, the study analyzes the results of a survey on what kind of leadership Korean American church congregation members desire. Many of Korean American church congregation members want the servant leadership model for their pastors because they have difficulty adapting to their new life in America. They suffer physical and mental stresses and depression arising from life as a minority group in a foreign land.
