The author researched opinions of biblical scholars and Christian theologians, interviewed gay and lesbian Christians, and studied three congregations in order to develop models of hospitality that welcome gay and lesbian people into the fellowship of United Methodist congregations. A trajectory of welcome for the stranger was developed, using the books of Ruth, Isaiah and Mark. That focus of inclusion offers a foundation for biblical and theological rationales for alternative understandings of hospitality and concrete expressions of welcome offered by actual congregations. It explores a number of key women in the New Testament, the developmental theories of Carol Gilligan, and ten sermons by Anglican/Episcopalian women priests.  The thesis then examines homiletics curricula at four Anglican colleges in Canada.
