The holy instant occurs when God supernaturally enters into the human realm of existence and reveals divine knowledge, understanding, and wisdom in order for a person or group of people to accomplish God's unique will in a particular situation at a particular time. This paper explores the topic of change, in light of the many changes occurring today in the Roman Catholic Church. Drawing upon scripture, church history, contemporary secular change management literature, spirituality (especially spirituality employed in the past during times of change), and certain theologies, this paper charts one spiritual path people can follow during times of change in the church.    It begins with an exploration of the process of change in general. What are the reasons people resist change, especially changes in the church?  What are some of the emotions we can expect to feel as we are going through change?  Do these emotions hold up to the light of scrutiny?  Sometimes when we examine our feeling in light of reality we find that the feelings are baseless or have a basis in something other than the immediate change to which we are trying to adapt.    Change within a religious context is explored, and some theological approaches to change are considered.  Finally, the author describes a unique spiritual approach to change which has been successfully offered as reflection sessions during the years 2001-2003 in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester, NY.  These reflections are entitled 'The LEAP of Faith,' with LEAP being an acronym representing four essential components of this particular approach: Learning, Experience, Action, and Prayer. Participants in these reflection sessions have included professional Diocesan and parish staffs, volunteers, clergy, professed religious and parishioners.  The overwhelming majority of participants, across all categories, have reflected favorably upon this unique spiritual approach to change."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128040232714240,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:53:29.364Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:39:58Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:05:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b117583e-9dd8-4335-957a-42a82ca67cb4","accessControl_ssim":["1b19fc56-1f0a-4bfc-8a4c-9f729887de35"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Welcoming the stranger: practices of hospitality as a prophetic witness to gay and lesbian persons in the United Methodist Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:39:57Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:14:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["6ac141cc-3a3f-4d94-97a2-a4a4454c7bff"],"hasLease_ssim":["83d0fbf2-1130-411e-ad01-92797420aeaa"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Christopher H Evans"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John Patrick Colatch"],"publisher_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Gay men","Lesbianism","Hospitality--Religious aspects--Christianity","Church membership","United Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Thesis: Practices of hospitality can be a prophetic witness of welcome for gay and lesbian person in the United Methodist Church. A trajectory of welcome for the stranger was developed, using the books of Ruth, Isaiah and Mark. The power of drama to communicate values, truths, and beliefs has a long history in the secular milieu.  Although the biblical tradition is not a dramatic tradition, its narrative is flexible enough to become a dramatic presentation.  This study traces the role of drama in the Roman Catholic tradition of faith and its use as a viable tool for individuals to experience healing and reconciliation as they tell their story in the context of sacred scripture.  Research has revealed that while many individuals may seek pastoral counseling, such intervention may not always lead them to a place of acceptance in the community of faith. These individuals may take solace in hearing the Word of God and allow that Word to draw them into the compassionate presence of a loving God. Empirical data from pastoral counseling experience, biblical and theological insights, use of active contemplation methods, social and theological issues take on new meaning when one experiences exclusion from 'the rooms' of the Christian community.  The power of a dramatic play can be used to build a bridge between the individual and the Christian community.  The reflections of the participants are revealed in the power of this medium, which brings healing and reconciliation to individuals and communities.  This work recognizes drama as a credible tool to communicate truth, to address issues that are often ignored, and to engage a community in a dynamic way.  Drama has power where words fail.  It causes something to happen within both the community and the dramatist."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130051490611201,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:25:27.450Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:01:18Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:31:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6eb5af44-629b-4e06-8029-d838cb8018bb","accessControl_ssim":["f2f36421-22b0-4e1f-9296-d27a7917f62c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Dialectic preaching in a postmodern ethos"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:01:17Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:22:31Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["6a6070a5-f6dd-48db-a89e-91dae29e7029"],"hasLease_ssim":["88f83380-6f82-4e39-8e5c-9a5a03d6ccf0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["John A Colacino"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John A Kroschel"],"publisher_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Postmodernism","Law and gospel","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This work develops a homiletic method that is effective in a postmodern setting while retaining a law gospel tension. The reflection of a focus group on a series of sermon demonstrates that a reinterpretation of the law/gospel dialectic, assisted by new models of preaching, can address the unique challenges of a postmodern context."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126689561968640,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:32:01.265Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T05:30:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:24:24Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"58a9900b-656e-4359-84f3-5bd7676b4aca","accessControl_ssim":["60b4b809-470c-44af-ac7c-f19025722d02"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Developing an effective campus ministry for Korean Americans"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T05:30:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:43:57Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["013389ef-1d39-40b2-9a36-1c0dc81f25d8"],"hasLease_ssim":["73f73d4e-89d6-4675-a297-6f174a80426e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Roslyn A Karaban"],"year_tesim":["1997"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jason Seongho Jeon"],"keyword_tesim":["Campus ministry"],"publisher_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Korean Americans","Intergenerational relations"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project proposes to mobilize a rising second generation of Korean American campus ministries among local churches in the US. This work explores how systems theory can be employed by the pastor to help the couple understand the covenants in which they were nurtured and still participate.  The pastoral or hermeneutic circle was used as the author's methodology. This begins in pastor's experience of preparing couples for marriage.  The next element in this process was social analysis in which the author explored those elements of family systems theory and technique which were useful to the marriage preparation.  Then, the author engaged in theological reflection using the biblical concept of covenant as how notion of covenant can be beneficial for defining and interpreting contemporary Christian marriage. Lastly, a model of marriage preparation using family systems theory as well as the idea of covenant from a systems perspective is illustrated.  A framework was offered along with tools and techniques for actual sessions with couples."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131012236836864,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:40:43.689Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:23:09Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:22:42Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5d9de092-80b6-46eb-a2cf-ae371b2f3baf","accessControl_ssim":["66312b87-e455-43f5-a638-bb4df952c2ec"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Consider the trees of an orchard"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:23:09Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:53:00Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["65e5a60c-774e-4c11-a8b0-62a486114086"],"hasLease_ssim":["085dfa6d-df1a-4d9d-8ff8-d7cbd8376cfe"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Robert J Kennedy"],"year_tesim":["1994"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Stephen P Devine"],"keyword_tesim":["Theology, Reformed"],"publisher_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Creation","Nature--Religious aspects--Christianity","Fox, Matthew"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Recent interest and awareness of enviromental issues has caused a resurgence of the study of natural theology within the Christian Church named by Matthew Fox as creation-centered theology.  The spiritual development of individual members of a rural Presbyterian congregation and the spiritual enrichment of the community of faith at large, as observed by the pastor, is explored utilizing the heuristic model of an apple orchard.  The comparison of the nurture of trees and enrichment of individuals and congregation employs the praxis circle of practical theology as delineated by James Poling and Donald Miller. In doing so the praxis circle begins with the experience of the individuals, describes and evaluates the two opposing theologies within the congregation, seeks to find correlation of creation-centered theology and Reformed theology in secular disciplines, ecclesiastical mandates, and denominational documents, which gives rise to new guidelines and practices for the faith community and its members.  It is affirmed that the heuristic model of an apple orchard is helpful to describe spiritual development."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126105621528576,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:22:44.376Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":45,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Austin J Joyce","hits":1,"label":"Austin J Joyce"},{"value":"Carl H Vom Eigen","hits":1,"label":"Carl H Vom Eigen"},{"value":"Carol Heather Finlay","hits":1,"label":"Carol Heather Finlay"},{"value":"David E Carnie","hits":1,"label":"David E Carnie"},{"value":"Denise W Mack","hits":1,"label":"Denise W Mack"},{"value":"Don C Markham","hits":1,"label":"Don C Markham"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Campus ministry","hits":1,"label":"Campus ministry"},{"value":"Child dedication service","hits":1,"label":"Child dedication service"},{"value":"Extrinsic-intrinsic typology","hits":1,"label":"Extrinsic-intrinsic typology"},{"value":"Family environment scale","hits":1,"label":"Family environment scale"},{"value":"Relation (Theology)","hits":1,"label":"Relation (Theology)"},{"value":"Theology, Reformed","hits":1,"label":"Theology, Reformed"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Marriage counseling","hits":6,"label":"Marriage counseling"},{"value":"Church work","hits":3,"label":"Church work"},{"value":"Education--Curricula","hits":3,"label":"Education--Curricula"},{"value":"Pastoral counseling","hits":3,"label":"Pastoral counseling"},{"value":"Spiritual life--Christianity","hits":3,"label":"Spiritual life--Christianity"},{"value":"Boszormenyi-Nagy, Ivan","hits":2,"label":"Boszormenyi-Nagy, Ivan"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[{"value":"New York (State)--Rochester","hits":1,"label":"New York (State)--Rochester"},{"value":"New York--Rochester","hits":1,"label":"New York--Rochester"}],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":45,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School","hits":45,"label":"Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":45,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"1982","hits":12,"label":"1982"},{"value":"1983","hits":8,"label":"1983"},{"value":"1981","hits":6,"label":"1981"},{"value":"2002","hits":5,"label":"2002"},{"value":"1992","hits":4,"label":"1992"},{"value":"2003","hits":3,"label":"2003"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Miscellaneous","hits":45,"label":"Miscellaneous"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":45,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School","hits":45,"label":"Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":45,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":2,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":5,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":45,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":false}}}
