It uses questionnaires and personal interviews to obtain information from Roman Catholic and Protestant parents who have recently lost a child. Analysis of the data yields the following major results: 1) There is mixed support for the hypotheses that extreme degrees of religious beliefs and activities lead to more intense grief reactions, to less successful resolution of grief than a moderate degree of religious beliefs and activities. Religious value orientation was significantly associated with high frequency of crying but not with felt need to cry. Neither the respondents' intrinsic religious value score nor the extent of their being extrinsically active or inactive in church had an effect on successful resolution of grief. 2) Female respondents tend to be more religious than males. 3) More males tend to have accepted their loss. Beliefs that God can be trusted, is love, knows all that is best, is merciful, will provide, and that he will reunite family members are useful."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799715541248638976,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:48:08.526Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:10:37Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:36:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ec9092de-d6a3-458d-99cd-7440e124fa8b","accessControl_ssim":["2380b9cc-ae3b-40a3-93e9-1cef8b4e74e5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Spirituality and healthcare: renewing old ties, forging a new partnership"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:10:36Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:53:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d26d9790-c308-4b92-b69a-c2d8de80833e"],"hasLease_ssim":["6d0dedd7-27a3-4f10-a677-005ce9a6b16e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Patricia Schoelles"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Richard C McCaughey"],"publisher_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Religion","Health","Spiritual life--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis demonstrates that spiritual health and physical health are an integrated whole and, therefore, should not be treated separately in our community healthcare settings. Further, this thesis posits that spiritual care professionals (e.g. chaplains) need to move from strictly ancillary support toward the practice of integrative medicine. The thesis begins with an historical perspective which outlines the gradual bifurcation between spirituality and healthcare in the Western world. This split was occasioned principally by the European Church's growing emphasis on the salvation of souls, and by science's growing dominion over the physical and natural worlds. This section ends with evidence of an emerging reintegration of spirituality and healthcare. With the understanding that such a reintegration requires an inclusive definition of spirituality, the thesis posits a definition of spirituality unrelated directly to religion and religious practices. A discussion follows utilizing the development of Old Testament spirituality to understand the relationship between medical crisis and spiritual crisis. This is followed by an extensive presentation of the efforts of scientific researchers to demonstrate the relationship between spirituality/religiosity and physical health. The last substantive chapter of this thesis is devoted to the writer's efforts as a professional healthcare chaplain to help make spiritual care an integral part of healthcare. The results of his practice of integrative medicine are outlined in the appendices."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130745081692160,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:36:28.910Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:10:09Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:46:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"18b616c2-f018-439b-9611-50a97ef37258","accessControl_ssim":["e3f12ebd-7253-4469-b853-c0ab878337e5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Developing ethical leadership in youth to reduce violence among them: a resource for the church and society"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:10:08Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:51:19Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8afa905e-9ac7-4aa1-b269-a4f168287e87"],"hasLease_ssim":["44e88368-5b2d-41e7-ba9c-6914206e65da"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["David Krueger"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Gregory E Coles"],"publisher_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership","Christian ethics","Church work with youth","Violence"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The lifeworlds and problems that lead some young people to lives of violence, crime, cognitive and academic deficiencies, substance and alcohol abuse and/or other anti-social behaviors is one of the most serious problems facing our nation as we enter the new millennium. In order to critically examine this problem attention is first given to the issue of identity formation, the role it plays in the development of human beings and how unhealthy psychological and psychosocial development plays a major role in leading some young people to act out violent or otherwise anti-social behavior(s). Posited here is that Erik Erikson provides a planned theory of behavior that sheds great light on the role of identity formation, prosocial behavior both as an individual and as an individual who is part of a reference group. Racial identity, racial socialization and racial salience must be considered in any approach designed to assist Black American youth relative to the issue of youth crime and violence. Theological and ethical analyses are brought to bear on the problem being examined. The position taken is that the problem of youth violence and crime is, perhaps, best addressed from within a religious/theological framework of meaning. Moreover, that the Black Church and African-American moral tradition provides a model for developing ethical leaders. Such a model can provide a useful framework for working with young people in order to reduce violence, criminal and other anti-social behaviors among them. Walter Earl Fluker has done extensive research in the area of developing ethical leaders from the Black Church and African Americans moral tradition. This work is based on his exhaustive study of Howard Thurman and Martin Luther King, Jr. The model is based on four concepts; agapeic love (the overarching concept), character, civility and community. Based on these concepts a program model with these four foci as the foundational principles is described. The program is designed to work with 8-14 year old inner-city, socio-economically deprived youth. An evaluation of project outcomes follows. A postscript chapter details the potential role of the Black Church and Black clergy in working with these, our most challenged young folk."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799715410794250240,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:46:04.115Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:08:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:26:52Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d961882a-36ab-4e7a-a59e-f4e0b847caaf","accessControl_ssim":["65bff0c7-122f-44e0-ab61-f9528e64ddff"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Lay training and spiritual formation for leadership and ministry in the rural multi-station parishes of St. Peter and St. Anne, North Abaco, Bahamas"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:08:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:20:50Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["adbca4d0-82d2-4130-b8ac-e73a1c0f2bd7"],"hasLease_ssim":["dc109678-4c01-455c-b352-bcb0f2a27922"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["John A Colacino"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Santosh K Marray"],"publisher_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Spiritual formation","Church work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project proposes a model of lay training and spiritual formation for ministry among lay leaders in rural multi-station parishes.
